Sustainable agriculture empowers smallholder farming families in Senegal

Many smallholder farming families in Senegal face significant challenges. Climate change is leading to more frequent droughts and floods, soil fertility is declining, and the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is harming both people and the environment. At the same time, demand for healthy and sustainably produced food is growing.

To address these challenges, the Liechtenstein Development Service (LED), in collaboration with HEKS/EPER and the Senegalese farmers’ organization FENAB, is supporting the expansion of organic farming in Senegal.

The project promotes organic farming and strengthens the marketing of sustainably produced food. Smallholder families receive training in organic farming methods, access to seeds and inputs, and support in certifying their products. At the same time, new marketing channels are being created so that producers can better sell their products and earn a higher income.

The results so far show that this approach is having an impact. Already, more than 1,100 producers are participating in the certification system for organic products. Each year, more than 840 tons of agricultural products are certified and marketed according to organic standards. In addition, over 30 percent of participating producers have been able to increase their income.

Over the next three years, approximately 4,500 smallholder farming families are expected to benefit from the project activities. Plans include additional training, improved access to organic seeds and inputs, the promotion of solar technologies, and the development of new markets for certified products.

For the LED, sustainable development is closely linked to strengthening local structures. The project helps improve food security, conserve natural resources, and open up new economic opportunities for rural families. At the same time, it promotes agriculture that remains sustainable for future generations. You can find more information about the project here.
