Strengthening the income of smallholder families in the mango value chain

Brief description of the project

Mango is the most important fruit grown and exported in Burkina Faso. It is of great importance for the food security and livelihood of the people of Burkina Faso. Burkina Faso is Africa’s largest producer of dried organic mangoes and the leading exporter of fresh organic mangoes. However, there is regular damage caused by fruit flies, which leads to major losses in production and processing. Although there are methods to control fruit flies that could improve the income of stakeholders in the mango sector without increasing economic, health and environmental risks and reducing the use of chemical insecticides, they are not widely applied.

As part of the IPMango project, CEAS is therefore focusing on co-developing a transdisciplinary approach to promote the introduction of proven ecological technologies for the sustainable control of pests and diseases, i.e. an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach.

Project goals

• The mango production of smallholder farmers will be increased through the widespread introduction of available, accessible, innovative and jointly developed Integrated Pest Management solutions against mango fruit flies.
• The mango industry, policy makers and donors support the wider diffusion of Integrated Pest Management technologies and the development of mango value chains through better collaboration, a climate of trust between stakeholders and a better business and regulatory environment.
