Smallholder farmers in Africa, Latin America and Asia are the backbone of many food systems and yet are often underfunded. A lack of investment and a lack of technical support make it difficult for them to develop their farms sustainably, cope with climate change and secure their yields.
This is precisely where the Smallholder SustaiNability Upscaling Program (SSNUP) comes in. It supports actors along the agricultural value chains – from producers to processors: through technical assistance and accompanying investments. This improves financial services, advisory services and market access for smallholder farmers.
The LED is contributing 1.5 million euros to the program and is helping smallholder families to increase their productivity, become more resilient to crises and achieve a stable income.
Goals of the program:
- Smallholder farmers gain access to new financial services, training and sales markets.
- Agricultural companies grow sustainably, create jobs and invest in environmentally friendly practices.
- Impact investors are encouraged to invest in previously underserved agricultural markets.
- Companies outside the program are increasingly adopting sustainable production and processing practices.
The program runs from May 2025 to April 2029 and is implemented in low- and middle-income countries. It makes an important contribution to food security, poverty reduction and the promotion of sustainable agricultural systems.
