2026 Global Hunger Index: No Security Without Food Security

How are hunger, conflict, and security connected? This question was the focus of the presentation of the 2026 Global Hunger Index on October 21 in Bern. The event was organized by Helvetas, and the Liechtenstein Development Service (LED) provided financial support for the report and the event. Executive Director Andreas Sicks welcomed the guests on behalf of the LED.

Under the title “No Security without Food Security,” the event highlighted the close connection between food security, social stability, and peace. After all, hunger is not merely a consequence of crises and conflicts. A lack of food security can exacerbate existing problems, weaken the resilience of communities, and further jeopardize social stability.

The Global Hunger Index (compiled by Welthungerhilfe and Helvetas) highlights how conflicts, extreme weather events, and economic crises undermine food security. When agricultural production, markets, and supply chains are disrupted, people not only lose access to food but often also lose their livelihoods.

The discussion therefore also focused on possible solutions: How can food systems become more resilient? What policy measures, partnerships, and investments are needed to combat hunger in the long term while promoting peace and stability?

Food Security as the Foundation of Sustainable Development

Promoting sustainable food systems is one of the LED’s key priorities. Through its financial support for the 2026 Global Hunger Index and this event, the LED is helping to raise public awareness of the connections between hunger, security, and sustainable development.
