Strengthening a system for the certification and marketing of organic products

Brief description of the project

Organic production is not feasible for many small farmers in Senegal, even though it brings environmental and health benefits for producers and consumers. The consolidation of a participatory guarantee system (PGS) and the associated label “Bio Senegal” under the leadership of the FENAB(Fédération Nationale pour l’Agriculture Biologique/National Federation for Organic Agriculture) is intended to remedy this situation by promoting the certification service with marketing support, improving access to organic inputs, production equipment and technical training and creating a more favorable political environment for organic farming in Senegal.

Project goals

  • The PGS mechanisms are decentralized, which enables local anchoring in the four intervention locations
  • The income of the Bio SENEGAL players has increased
  • FENAB advocates organic farming to political decision-makers
  • FENAB’s governance and financial sustainability are strengthened
