However, women remain underrepresented in computer science, technology, and related fields. Societal role models and stereotypes contribute to the fact that significantly fewer young women choose to pursue training or a career in these areas.

This is exactly where the LED-supported “Sisters of Code” project comes in. Since 2024, girls and young women have had the opportunity to learn to code for free and develop their digital skills. At the same time, the program is about more than just technical knowledge: Participants are encouraged to build confidence in their own abilities and discover that career paths are open to them—even in fields where women have traditionally been underrepresented.

From Programming Courses to Career Starts
The project is aimed at young women at various stages of their lives. Up to 450 participants complete the training program offered by the “Sisters of Code” programming clubs. There, they acquire basic programming skills and gain hands-on experience with digital technologies. For up to 270 young women, the support goes one step further. In an advanced program, they receive targeted preparation for entering the workforce. This includes, among other things, courses in digital marketing, UX/UI, and web development. New technological developments, such as artificial intelligence, are also incorporated into the training.

In this way, the project combines basic digital literacy with concrete career prospects. After all, strong digital skills improve young women’s chances of finding skilled, better-paying jobs—including in Cambodia’s growing technology sector.

Role models open up new paths
Another key focus is on how society perceives women in technical professions. Young women need not only access to training, but also people who show them that this path is possible.

That is why “Sisters of Code” highlights successful women in technology and computer science and promotes dialogue within a growing community. Participants are encouraged to share their knowledge and become role models for other girls and young women. “Sisters of Code” was founded in 2019 as the first free coding club for girls in Cambodia. The successful and popular project was evaluated this year. The LED is considering extending its support.

Programming, understanding digital applications, and making the transition into the workforce: Through the “Sisters of Code” project, the Liechtenstein Development Service (LED) supports young women in Cambodia in acquiring key skills for an increasingly digital workplace.
