In the West African country of Senegal, the reforestation of mangrove forests is making steady progress. CAREM, the local organization on the ground, is doing an excellent job. LED project manager Cheikh Gueye and representatives of the Austrian partner organizations Horizont3000 and Welthaus Graz were recently able to see this for themselves. <\/p>\n\n
In the mangrove swamps of the Saloum river delta on the Atlantic coast, people grow rice, fish and crustaceans live there, even oysters. The mangroves are therefore the central part of a unique and life-sustaining ecosystem and provide an important source of income and food for the local rural population, especially for women. <\/p>\n\n
